Cape Town Ostrich Ranch offers fun for the entire family

Are you always looking for interesting places to go to, new things to try, ways to entertain the kids and some fun for the entire family? Well the Cape Town Ostrich Ranch might be just the answer.

It is about a 20 minute, scenic drive from Cape Town down the N7 to a place called Philadelphia. The ranch offers the most gorgeous views of rolling green hills where it feels like time slows down. Their claim to fame is that they house the world’s smallest ostrich, Tom Thumb, who made it into the Guinness World Records. You can meet Tom Thumb and even feed him if you go on the guided tour.

Tom Thumb - the world's smallest ostrich

The tour provides great facts about ostriches, some of which are that they are obsessed with shiny objects, they eat stones which help with digestion, they can run about 70 kilometres per hour, the male has black feathers, while the females are a dull grey and their eyeballs weigh more than their brains.

If you are wondering whether the egg has 24 yolks as most people are under the misguided belief, well, it doesn’t. It has one yolk and the egg is the equivalent of two dozen chicken eggs. The tour is very insightful and while they don’t allow you to ride an ostrich, mostly for liability because of its speed, they do offer you a photo opportunity while you sit on an ostrich which is secured.
The farm is home to two majestic cheetahs, some petting animals – miniature goats and geese, which the kids are welcome to feed and there is a play structure, swings and a sandpit to keep the little ones entertained.

They have an onsite restaurant where we enjoyed a lovely breakfast of ostrich strips and stir-fried veggies, which are served with eggs and home-baked bread. It is a great venue for a breakfast get-together or to host a party and their kitchen is halal.

There is also a lovely boutique with beautiful souvenirs and even a small scratch patch of gems. After breakfast you are welcome to just meander around the farm to enjoy the fresh air and views.

Hiking the Noordhoek Peak Circuit in Silvermine

An easy 7km trail that is kid and dog-friendly My love affair with Silvermine Nature Reserve, part of the Table Mountain National Park, started four years ago when we hiked the Noordhoek Peak Circuit. I absolutely fell in love with the place - so much so that almost every Sunday, come rain or shine, you can find us exploring one of the Reserve’s trails.  Naturally when we got Kygo, our exuberant Rottweiler, we took him along on our hikes. Kygo was built with adventure hard-coded in his DNA. He absolutely loves water, swimming and outdoor adventures, and Silvermine offers all of this.  Kygo and I at the Noordhoek Peak Circuit looking out over Hout Bay About the Noorhoek Peak Circuit The Noordhoek Peak Circuit is a 7km hike that you can comfortably complete in about 2 and a half hours. With an elevation of 754m at the Peak, it offers spectacular views of some of Cape Town’s most amazing beaches. This hike is incredibly beautiful and as you are walking there are so many different aspects

Klaasenbosch is a delightful trail for a walk with your dog

People often ask how I know about so many trails and the truth is some of them are discovered in a serendipitous manner. Klaasenbosch was one of those amazing ‘by chance’ discoveries and has quickly crept up our favourite list.  We were doing the Alphen Trail one day, and we usually start at the bottom of Alphen Drive and walk all the way to the top of the trail. As we came out on the other side at Hohenort Avenue, we saw another trail board across the road and decided to try it. The rest is history... There are no cyclists allowed, which makes it a popular spot for dog walking and trail running. The view of Klaasenbosch A great place to take your dog for a walk It is a short 3km

A review of Gloria Serobe's 'An Ode to My Mother-in-Law, Winnie Serobe… A mentorship of love and honour'

Life lessons we can all benefit from Hot off the press, ‘An Ode to My Mother-in-law, Winnie Serobe… a mentorship of love and honour’ written by Gloria Serobe launched on National Women’s Day (9 August 2023) in South Africa. This auspicious date also marks the 10th anniversary of Winnie Serobe’s passing. Gloria’s book reflects on her relationship with her mother-in-law, the lessons Mama Winnie imparted to her and how the application of these lessons has improved the lives of so many people that Mama Winnie has touched. Gloria credits a big part of her success to Mama Winnie’s networks that she exposed her to very early on in her career. And the lessons and learnings around caring for the community, lifting as your rise, the true meaning of living a life of service and asking the question, “Is what I’m doing good for all South Africans?”, is some of the things we can all apply in our daily lives.  In the book, Gloria reflects on her journey with the Serobe family, and they are nothing sh
