Frankel, author of Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office and its sequel, is an executive coach and has helped many professionals for over 20 years. In her book she explores 133 common mistakes women make and provides coaching tips to rectify the behaviour or attitude. While we explore 10 of these tips, the book is best used as a handbook to refer back to often. 1. Pretending it’s not a game   The workplace much like any other game has rules. Think of the popular TV series Game of Thrones which tells of warri

How to make rainbow frosted cupcakes

Rainbow roses created with a Wilton 2D nozzle Who doesn't love rainbows? They appear after the rain when the sun starts peeking through and bring some cheer and happiness because of how colourful they are.  It is also a great theme for kiddies birthday parties.  Over the weekend I made some cupcakes for my friend's niece's birthday party and used a simple trick to get the rainbow effect with my frosting. Check out my how to video below, which shows you how to create the rainbow effect and then I demonstrate how to pipe roses with the Wilton 2D nozzle. I used my regular red velvet recipe with a cream cheese frosting (check my YouTube channel for it).  Give me a like, share or leave a comment. Thanks ;)

Aquila a great weekend getaway location boasting the Big 5

Waleed and I were fortunate to spend the weekend of 5 to 7 May 2017 at Aquila Private Game Reserve situated in Touws River. We celebrated our 8-year wedding anniversary, which was the  perfect excuse for a local getaway. From Cape Town, it is about a 2-hour drive on the N1, using the toll road. It is an extremely scenic drive where you are towered by the Hawequas Mountain Range, part of the Hawequas Nature Reserve, where the indigenous shrubs and proteas are mesmerising. You pass Rawsonville and Worcester and go through the Hex River Valley. The pass is littered with baboons who often sit in the middle of the road and are unperturbed by oncoming traffic. The Hex River Valley The Hex River Valley is awash with different shades of green as the vineyards shed their late harvest and there are numerous hawkers selling grapes on the side of the road. Caution if you do go this way that there is a sign up to say they use it as a hijacking tactic. Despite the sign, which was an offic

A review of Swimming upstream, a book by Shirley Zinn

It’s been a couple of months since I blogged. I’ve been a bit preoccupied. A few weeks ago I attended our company’s awards evening where we recognised the work of our staff volunteers. I was privileged to meet one of the guest speakers, Professor Shirley Zinn, who shared a brief synopsis of her story. She has a book Swimming Upstream, which I read cover to cover on the Saturday after we met. Shirley’s story is both mesmerising and heart-breaking. As the reader you are taken along on her journey which was not easy but her attitude and perseverance resulted in an inspirational tale of how hard work is rewarded abundantly. Here are some of the highlights from Shirley’s book that stood out for me: 1. Where you start out doesn’t have to determine where you end up. You are not a product of our circumstance. Shirley was born in Steenberg on the Cape Flats in the Western Cape. It is an area that is consumed with socio-economic conditions such as gangsterism, domestic violence, poverty,

Good Hope Farm, near Robertson, provides a tranquil weekend getaway

We spent the Valentine’s weekend, celebrating my dad’s 62nd birthday, on Good Hope Farm . It is about a 2-hour drive from Cape Town (during relatively low to no traffic). Travelling on the N1, through the Huguenot Tunnel, you will pass Goudini Spa, go through Worcester and Robertson and cross the Breede River, where the farm is a little oasis at the end of a gravel road, at the base of an amazing mountain range. The route is scenic and lined with loads of vineyards and you pass quite a few wine farms on your way to the farm. You don't get more rustic than a vintage petrol pump One of the cottages on Good Hope Farm The mountains go on forever and ever... framed by marshmallow clouds. A digital detox We reached the farm just before sunset and as soon as we entered the gate my google maps app lost connectivity. I was surprised, and in hindsight, pleasantly so that there was no signal on the farm and no internet in the cottages. We connected to the WIFI at the main
