One D-isappointing night at the Cape Town Stadium

Their performance lacked gees

Last night (1 April 2015) One Direction performed at the Cape Town Stadium as part of their On the road again tour and it was an April fool’s joke! The experience can best be likened to the South African term ‘choekoe’! This refers to when you light a firecracker and expect a big bang but instead it fizzles out... leaving the onlooker disappointed and with feelings of regret.

I'll confess I'm not the biggest Directioner… I don't own any of their albums, nor do I know all of their names (although I was schooled on the way to the concert) but I do suffer from a severe case of FOMO, which why I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I usually get Golden Circle tickets but when these were sold out, I got tickets on the day, a mere five hours before it started. I thought that maybe because I wasn’t in the circle the experience wasn’t the same. But I remember that with the Lady Gaga concert I was seated in almost the same position but her energy and her performance was captivating. You felt moved by the show!

One Direction’s performance lacked ‘gees’! Let’s just say I’m still waiting for them to BRING IT!
Harry was so disconnected; he looked like he felt he was doing the world a favour by being there. The highlight of the show was his metallic gold boots (by Dior Hommes that cost $970). I guarantee this will be a big hit this season, at least he can consider a career in fashion if the boy band thing fizzles out.

I’ll take bets that Harry is the next one to leave, after Zayn Malik, his former band member who quit recently. Harry will be known as the guy who once belonged to the band One Direction and also had Taylor Swift under his belt, no pun intended! He could have done us the courtesy of washing his hair prior to the show. Someone needs to tell him he is not a WWE fighter and spraying water on the audience is just uncouth and downright disgusting.

When I listen to their songs on the radio it is quite catchy and gets you moving but their delivery was really, really poor. Maybe because of Zayn’s absence they couldn’t perform their choreographed moves but they all looked like they pitched up in the clothes they were wearing all day. The one who plays the guitar is not that bad, he’s easy on the eye and there seems to be some talent there.

In between every song they expressed how much they love Cape Town. Another note to the band, if you say it so much, it sounds damn right insincere and unbelievable. I know from experience that it is not how much you say ‘I love you’ but how you express your love. They didn’t express their love for Cape Town at all. If they did their show would have been something to write home about.

Am I disappointed? Yes.

Do I regret going? Nope.

Should I have rather donated my ticket money to charity? Probably…

If you didn’t make it to the concert, you didn’t miss much!

Hiking the Noordhoek Peak Circuit in Silvermine

An easy 7km trail that is kid and dog-friendly My love affair with Silvermine Nature Reserve, part of the Table Mountain National Park, started four years ago when we hiked the Noordhoek Peak Circuit. I absolutely fell in love with the place - so much so that almost every Sunday, come rain or shine, you can find us exploring one of the Reserve’s trails.  Naturally when we got Kygo, our exuberant Rottweiler, we took him along on our hikes. Kygo was built with adventure hard-coded in his DNA. He absolutely loves water, swimming and outdoor adventures, and Silvermine offers all of this.  Kygo and I at the Noordhoek Peak Circuit looking out over Hout Bay About the Noorhoek Peak Circuit The Noordhoek Peak Circuit is a 7km hike that you can comfortably complete in about 2 and a half hours. With an elevation of 754m at the Peak, it offers spectacular views of some of Cape Town’s most amazing beaches. This hike is incredibly beautiful and as you are walking there are so many different aspects

Klaasenbosch is a delightful trail for a walk with your dog

People often ask how I know about so many trails and the truth is some of them are discovered in a serendipitous manner. Klaasenbosch was one of those amazing ‘by chance’ discoveries and has quickly crept up our favourite list.  We were doing the Alphen Trail one day, and we usually start at the bottom of Alphen Drive and walk all the way to the top of the trail. As we came out on the other side at Hohenort Avenue, we saw another trail board across the road and decided to try it. The rest is history... There are no cyclists allowed, which makes it a popular spot for dog walking and trail running. The view of Klaasenbosch A great place to take your dog for a walk It is a short 3km

A review of Gloria Serobe's 'An Ode to My Mother-in-Law, Winnie Serobe… A mentorship of love and honour'

Life lessons we can all benefit from Hot off the press, ‘An Ode to My Mother-in-law, Winnie Serobe… a mentorship of love and honour’ written by Gloria Serobe launched on National Women’s Day (9 August 2023) in South Africa. This auspicious date also marks the 10th anniversary of Winnie Serobe’s passing. Gloria’s book reflects on her relationship with her mother-in-law, the lessons Mama Winnie imparted to her and how the application of these lessons has improved the lives of so many people that Mama Winnie has touched. Gloria credits a big part of her success to Mama Winnie’s networks that she exposed her to very early on in her career. And the lessons and learnings around caring for the community, lifting as your rise, the true meaning of living a life of service and asking the question, “Is what I’m doing good for all South Africans?”, is some of the things we can all apply in our daily lives.  In the book, Gloria reflects on her journey with the Serobe family, and they are nothing sh
