A review of Cooked.inc a home-cooked meals to door service in Cape Town

Are you tired of take-out and convenience food? Worried about your waistline? Craving wholesome, balanced meals? Intolerant of gluten (not necessarily because of an allergy but because it is the current diet fad and everyone and their mother is banting, right?) Or just have very little time and no desire to cook. Maybe you can’t cook and don’t have any motivation to learn. Well, if you’ve answered yes or are nodding ferociously in agreement then I’ve discovered the best, most convenient solution…

I can’t cook. When I peel an onion besides the usual tear or two (which is normal) I bawl because I detest the exercise! Why do I hate cooking? Well it’s the creative, flexibility that I don’t like. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very creative and flexible but I also have an A-type personality. I’m a self-taught baker and can follow complex recipes to the ounce and pound and love the certainty that the result will resemble the picture. With cooking it is different – you need to have that elusive ‘feeling’… I can’t throw things together and taste as I go along to decipher what’s missing or whether it needs cumin or rosemary. Give me a recipe without any deviation and I’ve got this.

How did we get by for so long? Well Waleed can cook. Actually really, really well. I can grill most kinds of protein in the oven, am renowned for my roasted veggies and have a secret weapon, which is an extensive salad repertoire... You kinda realise when you are invited for pot-luck dinners and people limit their requests to things involving lettuce or dessert that they’ve cottoned onto what’s happening at home.

My husband (is an eternal optimist) who still believes that one day he will enjoy my home- cooked meals but it’s been almost closer to a decade (if I’m rounding up) and that hasn’t happened yet.

But I’ve found my get out of jail free card!

I discovered Cooked.inc while browsing through my Facebook feed, where multiple friends had liked or commented on their posts. Cooked.inc is a local, Cape Town-based service which is literally meals on wheels. Except they are lovingly prepared and use quality ingredients (free range and organic products are used where possible). The founder Mariam Harris, based in Goodwood, is a momtrepreneur from her social media profiles, who while raising two kids makes affordable meals that get delivered to your door at either work or home.

I’ve tried the service for the last three weeks and I’m absolutely impressed and recommend that you give it a try. We’ve never had the same meal twice over the last three weeks and I’ve already seen the menu for next week. The portions are generous, often including veggies or a side salad, with options if you are not eating carbs. It is definitely worth it (works out to around R50 a meal per person if you order the double delight – which caters for two) and the convenience is something that money can’t buy.

Cooked.inc observes meat-free Mondays so you can look forward to legume-based meals with a creative flair like Lentil and Winter Veg Stew or Veg Chili with sour cream and gauc.

Cooked.inc's beef tagine with mashed potato and broccoli
My most memorable meals over the last three weeks have definitely been the beef tagine with mashed potato and broccoli, the lamb curry and roti, the seafood paella and the Italian lasagna topped with three cheeses. Fridays you can also expect a traditional, Cape Malay meal.

The meals are also accompanied by a delicious sweet treat made by literally the sister-company Cakies with love. You can look forward to things like delicious date balls, mini doughnuts, a chocolate and macadamian nut cookie or a small serving of fruit salad. The mini-morsels will quell any sweet craving.

The weekly menu is updated on their Facebook page every Wednesday (for the following week’s delivery) or ask Mariam to add you to the distribution list and get it sent straight to your inbox.

Once you’ve placed your order, proof of payment will ensure that from Monday to Friday your lunch or dinner arrives like clockwork.

Visit the Cooked.inc Facebook page for more information or to get in touch with Mariam. You can also follow her on Instagram to be enticed by the mouth-watering meals. She does cater for larger groups as well.

So go ahead and save yourself some time by not slaving away in the kitchen because it is guilt-free meals that are easy on the waistline and also jam-packed with flavour!

  1. wow, as a working mom of two i'd love to utilise this service every single day....the sad reality is I can't afford it. :-( calculating on 3 times a week for two people comes to R1290 a month that's R7740 for only 6 months... I think I'm feeding my family soup this winter hahaha

    1. Thanks for the comment Arlene. It is a great service and I think the trade-off definitely is about how much you are prepared to pay for convenience. This service does save you time. Your potential savings will also depend on how much you spend on groceries and/or take-out a month. You'll be surprised when you work out the numbers that cooking isn't that much cheaper because of how much things cost :( Soup in winter is always a great idea :)

  2. Brilliant concept. Using it and loving it! It beats eating at any of the traditional fast food joints any day!

Cecilia Waterfall: A short, intense hike that your water-loving dog will enjoy

One of our absolute favourite hiking spots is Cecilia Forest. It has an array of different trails you can do, depending on your mood and what you’d like to see. One that is a short (5km), steep staircase climb to a beautiful oasis is the Cecilia Waterfall trail. This hidden gem, which takes about two hours to complete, is worth exploring with your pawsome pet and easy to find if you follow the landmarks below as a guide.  From Cecilia Forest parking area (opposite Hohenort Avenue, just off Rhodes Drive), follow the Jeep Track towards the pine forest. At the fork in the road, turn right and continue on this path until you reach a water feature.  It is a small catchment area, caused by a flowing stream that runs down the mountain, where your furry friend can take a dip. This is a welcome reprieve on a hot summer’s day and one of the highlights of the trail is that there’s quite a few spots where your dog can wet his undercarriage and cool down his paws.  When they’ve had enough of a swi

8 highlights from The leader who had no title

A modern fable on real success in business and in life by Robin Sharma I attended Robin Sharma ’s presentation at the Cape Town Convention Centre in 2013, which was part of his promotional tour for his book The leader who had no title . I first encountered Robin as one of the ‘talking heads’ in Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret and again when a very close friend of mine gave me his earlier book The monk who sold his Ferrari as a gift. But meeting Robin, when he autographed the copy of my book, was surreal as he embodies what he ‘preaches’. He is unbelievably humble, easy to talk to and has no sense of self-importance. Much like The Monk who sold his Ferrari, The leader who had no title is written as a fable. Although the characters and story are fictitious, the lessons and learnings that are shared are true and 100% applicable to anyone’s situation. The leader who had no title is told through the journey of Blake Davis, the protagonist from New York, who had a good upbringing but

Explore the vineyards at Groot Constantia with your family, including your dog

On Saturday we took Kygo, our rottweiler, for a walk at Groot Constantia . The estate was established in 1685 and is Cape Town’s oldest wine producing farm. It offers the most picturesque views of the vineyards and the mountains. The great news is that the estate is dog friendly (provided your pooch is on a lead) and you can wander on the designated paths on the estate between 8am and 5pm, 7 days a week. Kygo and I at the Groot Constantia Estate Groot Constantia offers amazing views and a fun-filled adventure Elephant's Eye in the distance Waleed and Kygo enjoying the stroll through the vineyards The estate is extremely popular with many people enjoying a trail run or a walk with the family. It also attracts lots of tourists with the sightseeing red bus passing through.  When you’ve entered the estate and parked, you can follow the tree-lined path that leads to the Iziko Museum where you can learn about the estate’s fascinating history. Behind it, there are two shallow ponds where
